The Migration of Helium Blockchain to Solana Was Approved After Community Voting

Helium, a blockchain-based network supporting wireless communication protocols operated by thousands of individual users, will migrate its Layer 1 blockchain to the Solana blockchain. Initially focused on powering Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as sensors and trackers, the network now has over 950,000 nodes or hotspots, with operators incentivized with crypto tokens.

Scott Sigel, the COO of the Helium Foundation, says the move to Solana will enable the project to achieve its ambitious goals of deploying and managing wireless networks at scale. “Solana has a proven track record of powering some of the largest decentralized initiatives in the world, and they were an obvious choice for us to partner with. In addition, switching to the Solana blockchain allows us to focus our efforts on scaling the network rather than managing the blockchain itself,” Sigel added.

The Helium Foundation, which first proposed the move in August, said its developers chose Solana after analyzing several other blockchains over the past few months. The foundation emphasized that this migration will provide users with “better access in the form of hardware and software wallets, DeFi, NFT marketplaces and composability with other applications within the Solana ecosystem.
